This week's poem comes from our beloved organist, Eric Machan Howd.

Pistachios

by Eric Machan Howd

It’s the ones

that don’t open

that mean the most.

We make the effort

think hard

about the approach:

use our teeth?

a pocket knife?

vise grips?

All methods

have their risk

and reward, yet

it’s the struggle

to discover what’s inside

that keeps us going.

Sometimes, we must

use another shell

to crack the meaning,

to open understanding

of what it means

to work.
